As previously fought Czechs

Against the background is not heroic behavior of the Czechs in World War II it looks quite unexpectedly that their ancestors were once dashing warriors. In the first half of the XV century they repeatedly beaten the Germans, Hungarians, Austrians, Poles, and made long-range raid, reaching even to the Baltic coast. One of the most famous battles of the then Czech troops took place exactly 590 years ago, June 16, 1426, near the town, which the Germans call Aussig and Czechs - Ústí nad Labem.

In 1423 the Saxon Margrave Friedrich captured the Czech border city, a large part of the population which were Germans, but after three years the Czechs have decided to fight him off. Czech army under the command of Prokop the Bald (aka Prokop the Great) came to the spring Aussig and surrounded the city. Margrave began to gather an army to deblokady his possession. And then very helpful for the Margrave and inappropriate for the Czechs Pope declared another crusade against the Hussites - followers burned for heresy priest Jan Hus, whom the Czechs considered as his spiritual master.

Among the German knighthood there were many willing to take part in this God-pleasing deed and at the same time slightly plunder neighbors. Under the banner of Frederick fell several thousand knights from different lands, and with the military servants and mercenaries total number of its troops quickly reached 13 thousand people. Czech chronicles say that the enemy was 75 thousand, and the most zealous chroniclers bring their number up to as many as 100 thousand, but it's a common thing in mythological medieval historiography.

In Prokop was about 11 thousand infantry and cavalry, but his main trump card is a powerful artillery, consisting, again, according to local chroniclers, of 180 guns. However, most modern historians believe that this figure is too high, too much, or on a par with manual guns counted arquebus that Czechs called hakovnitsami. In addition, the Czech army had several hundred fighting carriages, from which they were able to do fast-field fortifications - supply train.

On the strengthening of knightly cavalry, armed with swords and spears, have repeatedly broke the teeth. Nevertheless, the Margrave decided to attack, relying on high combat rescue their people, their robust armor and "special means" against the supply train - heavy battle hammers. In addition, it is hoped that the recent death of the charismatic leader of the plague and Hussite Jan Zizka talented commander demoralized on the opponent and the Czechs hardly managed to find a worthy successor to him.

However, Prokop the Bald was no less capable military leader. Upon learning of the approach of enemy troops, he posted his army on top of a large hill, surrounding it with a ring of carts, fastened by chains. Between carts were guns and wagons themselves, behind the high oak boards with triangular battlements, took positions and arrows crossbowmen of gakovnits.

The Germans attacked on foot. While cannonballs and bullets heavy arquebus considerably thinned their ranks, the Crusaders reached the supply train and began smashing with hammers, carts, and - connecting them to the circuit. At one point, they managed to break through the wide aisle, a few broken-down van. At arms broke through the fence, but there they were in for a surprise - the second wall is made up of high-stationary panels - Pavese, for which also hid the arrow. Knights found themselves between two fires, because behind them and continued to shoot crossbows hakovnitsy with survivors carts.

Suffering heavy losses, the Crusaders were unable to cut through Pavese, as for them, except for the shooters were standing still and spearmen. Soon knights panicked and rushed back into the passage. And then for Pavese team again fell on the ground, the soldiers stepped back, and from behind them flew a Czech cavalry led by Prokop. Riders have long pursued the enemy, which was hard to run in armor, leaving them with a chance for salvation.

The rout was complete. In the battle killed at least four thousand crusaders, including about 500 noble knights. Listing their names and titles takes in German chronicles several pages. Among the dead were Count Heinrich von Meissen, Oswald von Kirchberg, Ernst von Manstein, Friedrich von Baylihengen, Ernst von Gleichen, Dietrich von Witzleben and many other respected people. Czechs, this victory came at the cost of only 30 killed and died of wounds.

Repulsed Crusader warriors Prokop after a while stormed Aussig in retaliation for his stubborn resistance completely looted, making no difference between German and Czech homes. Then Hussites counterattacked and invaded Saxony, however, it is another story.
