A group of physicists from the Research Institute of Nuclear Physics of Moscow State University have learned on a simple personal computer to perform calculations of complex equations of quantum mechanics, which used powerful supercomputers in the West. This PC does the job faster. An article about the results of the work has been published in the latest issue of the journal Computer Physics Communications.

Scientists from the Moscow State University University were able to use a personal computer to the GPU to solve complex equations of quantum mechanics - previously used only for this powerful, expensive supercomputers. According to lead author of the works of Vladimir Kukulin, personal computer does the job much faster: in 15 minutes, he is doing the work for which the supercomputer spends 2-3 days.

The equations in question were formulated in the 60s of last century Russian mathematician Ludwig Faddeev. The equations describing the scattering of multiple quantum particles, ie, represented a quantum mechanical analog of the Newtonian theory of the three bodies. As a result quickly, a whole field of quantum mechanics called "physics of few-body systems."

This area is of great interest to scientists engaged in quantum mechanics. Their main goal was and still is to learn how to solve these equations. However, because of the incredible complexity of the calculation of the equation for a long time did not respond to the researchers - as long as there supercomputers.

The situation changed dramatically after the group of SINP decided to use their personal computer is one of the new graphics processors Nvidia Corporation, designed for use in game consoles. According to first author Vladimir Kukulin, Head of Laboratory of nuclear theory, the processor was not the most expensive - of those that you can buy at the store for 300-500 dollars.

The main problem in dealing with multiple scattering equations of quantum particles was drawing up the "core" - a huge two-dimensional table, consisting of tens of millions of rows and columns, each cell which itself was the result of very complicated calculations. But this table is like a screen with hundreds of trillions of pixels, and with a good GPU it was quite possible to build. Using software developed in Nvidia's, and write your own program, the researchers broke their calculations on 65 thousand streams and were able to solve the problem brilliantly.

"We have speed and that dream can not, - said Vladimir Kukulin. - The program works so that 260 million complex integrals on a desktop computer, it considers three seconds. And no comparison with supercomputers! My colleague from the University of Tübingen, the laboratory which does the same, lead calculations with the help of a supercomputer BlueGene, which is actually very expensive. And what he is seeking for two or three days, we do 15 minutes without spending a dime. "

The most amazing thing is that the desired quality of graphics processors, and a huge amount of software to them have been around for a long time, but in the West, no one used them for such calculations, preferring supercomputers. Anyway, our physicists have managed pretty surprised their Western counterparts.

"This work is, in our opinion, opens up completely new ways to analyze and nuclear resonance chemical reactions, - says Vladimir Kukulin. - It can also be very useful for solving a large number of computing tasks in plasma physics, electrodynamics, geophysics, medicine and many other areas of science. We want to organize something like training courses, where researchers from diverse scientific areas of peripheral universities that do not have access to supercomputers, could learn to do on their "personalkah" the same thing that we do.
