In Antarctica found live fish under the 740 meter layer of ice - VIDEO
Unique discovery has made a group of American scientists in Antarctica. They found beneath the Antarctic ice shelf ice thickness of 740 m of small fish, the website of the University of Northern Illinois. Fish observed by the camera lowered into a drilled well.
Drilling was carried out in the area of the West Antarctic ice sheet about 850 km from the edge of the Ross Ice Shelf. At this point, a layer of ice beneath the sea water, the distance between the shield and the bottom of the ice is approximately 10 m. There is no light, the temperature reaches an extremely low value - minus 2 degrees Celsius. But even in such conditions, as it turned out, can be a life.
Within a few hours of observation, scientists have recorded about 30 small fish. They had a transparent body with pinkish and brownish patches. The length of the fish was about 15 cm. The researchers also found under the ice a few red shrimp.
According to the scientists found fish feed on plankton, which is formed in the waters of the Ross Sea, and then entered under the ice sheet.
