Rio de Janeiro International Airport (GIG), or Galeao-Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport as it is otherwise known, now has the capacity to handle 15 million passengers per year.

The airport provides an essential gateway to this popular Brazilian holiday region and is located about 20 km / 13 miles north of the centre of Rio de Janeiro city, close to Duque de Caxias and the Parque Shangai. Located on Governador Island, the Galeao International Airport is now handling almost 10 million annual passengers and features two large terminals, both of which feature 12 jetways and are arranged in an oval shape. The main airlines include Avianca, Gol, TAM Linhas Aéreas and Varig, flying to domestic destinations in Brazil such as Buenos Aires, Salvador and São Paulo, and internationally to the cities of Lisbon, Madrid, New York and many more besides. For ground transport at Galeao International Airport, various options exist, the best of which include taxis provided by the Rio de Janeiro State Tourism Authority. Also on offer are public buses, which connect Rio's Novo Rio Rodoviaria bus station, next to the city centre, along with the main beach resorts.

The airport can be reached by taxi, by bus number 2018, which runs every half hour (between 5:30 and 22:30 hours) from the airport Galeano to the central bus station, downtown Rio de Janeiro, Santos Dumont airport, and southern parts of the city along the coast, the last stop on the main bus station in Barra da Alvorada Tijuca (Barra da Tijuca). Two terminals are connected by escalators. From Rio de Janeiro to the airport are two basic ways-Linha Vermelha and Avenida Brasil. On both roads there are signs the airport. The airport presents a car rental firm Avis, Hertz and Localiza; their offices are located at Terminal 1. Buses and taxis - the Most easily accessible way to get to Rio. Taxis are available, although travelers are advised to ignore the order office taxi service RDE, but instead contact the Bureau of Rio de Janeiro State Tourism Authority, and buy prepaid taxi vouchers. Otherwise, passengers should make sure that the taxi at the counter did not indicate the value of the previous passage. The airport shuttle bus leaves every hour and stops at major hotels and beaches.
