Lon Wa Buddhist Temple

Lon Wa Buddhist Temple, located in Davao City - one of the largest Buddhist temples in the Philippines and the largest on the island of Mindanao. It is located on the Avenue Kabagio 3-4 km north-east of the city center. At 500 meters away is Taoist Temple, but because it is beyond the fence, tourists rarely visit it. But Lon Wa is one of the main tourist attractions of the city - it is unique by the fact that it is one of the few Buddhist temples in the territory predominantly Muslim region. In Mindanao, Buddhism began to penetrate in the 7th century BC - Archaeologists have found evidence of this. With the arrival of the Spaniards on the island, widely introduced Christianity here, the number of followers of Buddhism declined significantly - today there are only about 3% of the total population of Mindanao.

At the entrance of the temple welcomes visitors statue of a smiling Buddha, quietly greeting visitors. Stairs to the temple is guarded by sculptures of lions - a traditional Buddhist protection from evil spirits. The simple architecture of the church with a green roof and grayish walls gives it a very charming and serene look. Inside, on the walls of Italian marble, you can see the words of the prayers, which, if desired, you can say. Around the temple is divided a small, cozy garden with palm trees and exotic flowers and walkways, tiled ordinary stones. Traditional lily pond is a real decoration of the garden.

The monks and novices are also living on the territory of Lon Wa - when meeting with them made a slight bow to greet. Sometimes you can see the Chinese students in monastic garb, praying before a statue of Buddha and sing ceremonial songs. An interesting detail - unlike the Taoist Temple, inside Lon Wa can take photos.

Arch of the Centuries

Arch of the Centuries - a monument, located in the University of Santo Tomas in Manila, 15 meters from the main gate. National Museum of the Philippines announced the Arch of the Centuries national treasure that serves as a reminder of the relationship of the university campus with a Spanish heritage. The monument became a symbol of the acquisition of knowledge - a gateway to greatness, which passed through generations of students, including graduates of the University of the Philippines national hero Jose Rizal, and the first President of the Republic Manuel Quezon.

When the university moved to a new building in the district Sampalok, arch was dismantled and also moved to a new location, where it is collected in its original form.

Once Arch now facing the main building of the University, he served as the main entrance into it, but during the Second World War, it was destroyed. The current Arch of the Centuries was built in strict accordance with the original. It consists of Doric columns, but its details clearly emerges the baroque style. The inscription on the arch reads: "Entrance to the history of the best generation of the Philippines", which serves as a reminder that many university graduates have had a significant impact on the history of the country. In the left column there is a memorial plaque with the name of Jose Rizal, on the right - with the name of Manuel Quezon. On top of the arch settled plaques describing the life of St. Thomas Aquinas (-to English - Santo Tomas), the patron saint of the university and all the Catholic schools.

All students entering the University of Santo Tomas, are a kind of initiation rite, known as the "Trail of Thomas Welcome" - they must pass under the arch. Archway and graduates - in the framework of celebrations on the occasion of a bachelor's degree. This tradition began in 2002. There is an old belief, according to which the archway is possible only in those cases - for admission to the university and after graduation. It is believed that if to break this rule, the fate will do so that the student will be expelled from school.
