Miami International Airport is located around 9 miles(14 km) northwest of the center of Miami and covers some 3,200 acres/1,300 hectares.
The airport is situated next to the Miami Springs Golf and Country Club, Lake Joanne and the Blue Lagoon Lake, and features four runways and one terminal, with eight concourses. Related industries employ almost 250,000 people and contribute more than $19 billion to the local economy.
Yearly flight movements at Miami International Airport have now exceeded 400,000, with around 35 million annual passengers and weekend averages topping 200,000. The onsite cargo facility has grown dramatically in recent years, making the airport America's number one in terms of overall international freight operations.
The public transport available at Miami Airport is operated by the Miami Dade Transit Department, with Metro buses and trains linking Miami Beach, where many upmarket resorts are to be found, including the iconic Fontainebleau Hotel along Collins Avenue. The Tri-Rail commuter service is a fast way to reach destinations in both Broward County and Palm Beach County, while airport taxis are never far away and run to downtown Miami in around 20 minutes. Also within easy reach of Miami Airport is the exclusive neighborhood of Bal Harbor, the glamorous South Beach area, the Cuban-style Little Havana community and the tropical Key Biscayne, which is connected by the Rickenbacker Causeway.
