According to BBC News, under a fallen tree in China, was found the biggest fungus in the world. As reported by BBC News, the length of this giant fungus is 10 m, width is 80 cm, and a preliminary assessment of the weight of this fungus is 500 kg. It is reported, that this fungus belongs to a giant Fomitiporia ellipsoidea.

According to BBC News, this discovery was made of Professor Yu-Cheng Dai, which represents a branch of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shenyang, as indicated, the professor very surprised finding such a large fungus.

The story of these found a giant fungus in general is a very complicated story. The fact, that many media reportedб that the giant fungus-was found in Hainan Province, China, and was not any information about this in the press of Hainan Province, as was not any information about this in the press of China. Many Russian-speaking and English-language media refer to the BBC, as the source of this news, but the strange thing - is that even the Chinese Academy of Sciences website as the source also points out BBC News, also on the website of the Chinese Academy of Sciences reported, that the information on this story were published in the journal Fungal Biology, but we did not find any information about the discovery of the fungus  in 2011, in Hainan Province. Incidentally, the Chinese Academy of Sciences website does not disclose the exact location and time of discovery, and no mention of Hainan Province, as a place of discovery of this fungus. Interestingly, the source of this news- the BBC News does not indicate that the fungus was found in the Hainan Province, China in 2011. BBC News did not report the exact date and exact place of discovery, and only reports that the first giant fungus was discovered by Professor Yu-Cheng Dai in 2008 in Fujian Province, China, and then in 2010 fungus was discovered in Hainan Province, China.

Also, never published any pictures of the fungus, but only published pictures of a person with small-scale fungus (see a photo), which is rather strange, since all images of interest, which depicts the entire fungus completely. Therefore, at this point there is no precise evidence of the reality of the discovery of a giant fungus, but an article in BBC News, which many and Russian, and English-language media was used as the primary source of news about the discovery of a new giant fungus in China. Even in the special biological forums, dedicated to the cultivation of mushrooms, were skeptical about reports of the discovery of a giant fungus in China. The chief point is that- there is no photo of the fungus, as sush giant fungus grow on the Earth a hundreds of millions of years ago. And this difference in time place of growth of the giant fungus at once attracted the attention of scientists and caused a certain amount of skepticism to any information on fungus-giant on the tropical island of Hainan, China.

In 2001, scientists studied the fossils of a giant six-meter fungus, further chemical analysis of these fossils to tree-like trunk shows that this is genuine ancient fungus, which grow  on Earth 350 million years ago. Thus, the BBC News mistaken about 350 million years in age dating of the this giant fungus.
