As part of the NASA-funded project has created a new material that can repair itself when damaged in less than a second. It consists of two layers of polymer solids, between which a special gel which is in contact with air (i.e., when the material gets damaged) almost instantaneously solidifies. This feature distinguishes the new material from other similar, also using liquid substance to extinguish. However, here the process is much faster and more efficiently. Such material in the future can be used, for example, in space and in particular to the ISS. He will be able to protect the fragile parts of the spacecraft from space debris. At ISS, of course, there are special shields that protect it, but the use of dynamic protection can improve the safety threshold. On Earth, such material can be used in machines of fragile items, shipping containers, and even telephones.
