Our civilization can be lost from volcanoes - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 18 July 2015 09:00

Powerful volcanic eruption similar in its capacity Tambor famous in the early 19th century, could occur in this century with a probability of 5-10%, which will lead to disastrous consequences and the potential destruction of a civilization, European geologists wrote in a report prepared for the European Science Foundation.
Today, many paleontologists and evolutionists believe that the most powerful volcanoes played a key role in many mass extinctions of animals and plants. For example, "great" Permian extinction, destroyed about 96% of animal species in the ocean, was caused by the massive outpourings of magma in Siberia. More modest eruption of Mount Toba in Sumatra nearly erased the humanity from the face of the Earth about 73 thoUSAnd years ago.

During the existence of human civilization there were seven rather large eruptions, one of which, the explosion of Mount Tambora in 1815, destroyed 71,000 people and led to a significant cooling of the climate and a series of crop failures and hunger in many countries throughout the world.

US-German geologist Hans-Peter Plag (Hans Peter Plag) and a number of other European experts in volcanology tried to understand how dangerous these volcanoes to mankind, given the seven-fold difference between the population of the earth 19th century and today.

According to their estimates, the chances of the emergence of such a disaster are high enough - they account for 10.5% of eruptions like Tambor. Their effects, according to the report, will be really disastrous, because humanity has not yet created a system of global monitoring of the state of volcanoes such as those seismic networks that monitor earthquakes.

Calculations show volcanologists, if such an eruption happens, civilization will suffer damage corresponding to several billion dollars a year. Scientists emphasize that it is only the human victims - the economy and industry will suffer more damage.

For this reason, geologists are calling on all governments to join together and create a global system for monitoring the state of the volcano, which will help to significantly reduce the number of human casualties and economic losses. Such a system, they estimated, would cost the world quite inexpensive compared to losses of - in the 370-400 million dollars.
