Liquid water, and even a kind of river were present on the surface of Mars moments ago by cosmic standards - about a million years ago, when the axis of rotation of the red planet was tilted more than today, say planetary scientists, who published an article in the journal Nature Communications.

In recent years, scientists have found a lot of hints on what on the surface of Mars in ancient times there were rivers, lakes and whole oceans of water, which contains almost as much fluid as our Arctic Ocean. On the other hand, some planetary scientists believe that even in ancient times Mars might be too cold for the permanent existence of the oceans, and the water to be in liquid state only during volcanic eruptions.

Tjalling de Haas (Tjalling de Haas) from the University of Utrecht (Netherlands) and his colleagues uncovered the mechanism by which distinctive rivers and streams of liquid water could exist on the red planet literally moments ago, studying the crater Source arising in the polar regions of the southern hemisphere of Mars, or 200 thoUSAnds or millions of years ago.

The slopes of the crater, as the scientists explain, dotted with many small canals and ravines that were allegedly left streams of meltwater. Team de Haas studied the structure and the amount of "junk" in them, trying to prove that they are indeed signs of movement of the water, as well as to assess its scope and frequency of such flows.

Judging by the lack of layers of light and dark sediment inside the gullies, as well as special finger-depressions on their slopes, they really arose as a result of the water flow, rather than melting dry ice - frozen carbon dioxide - and sliding soil. In general, the shape, depth, and other properties of these channels resemble something like ravines rugged slopes of the mountains on Earth.

A large number of boulders in these Martian gullies and their distribution on the slopes of the crater speak in favor of the fact that through these channels passed a lot of water every 60 years, and small floods have occurred every four years. According to the de Haas and his colleagues during these occasional floods, the depth of water in the crater could reach several tens of centimeters.

Given the young age of the crater, which means that liquid water periodically appeared on the surface of Mars relatively recently, between 200 thoUSAnd and one million years ago. How could she come from?

It is believed de Haas and his colleagues, the cause of liquid water in an almost polar latitudes of Mars was that relatively recently, over the past 4-5 million years, its rotation axis was tilted significantly more than today.

Because of this, Mars was much warmer than at the present time, especially in the temperate latitudes, allowing the water to remain in liquid form long enough to prodelyvat gullies and channels. All this, according to the authors, speaks in favor of the fact that Mars is not a "dry desert" and that its surface is more favorable for life than we thought today.
