Researchers from the University of California at Berkeley presented the new robot cockroach, which thanks to its unique streamlined shape of the body can overcome almost any obstacle in its path. Increased maneuverability of the new mini-robot engineers have borrowed from its natural prototype.

The developers set up an experiment with real insects. They built a frequent grid where the distance between the bars was not enough wide to cockroach went in smoothly. The study authors note that if the path to the goal is too cluttered, a similar strategy to maneuver no longer work for the robot cockroach. And then the work will need sensors.

In its work, the engineers were inspired by cockroaches that live in the rainforest and have to constantly overcome the obstacles in its path, maneuvering between tall grass and objects lying on the ground. The scientists examined their movements using high-speed cameras: insects often tried to climb obstacles, but if they were too high, then the cockroaches tilted his body at almost a right angle and pass through any opening.



Initially a prototype of a robot cockroach has a rectangular shape, which was not too effective in matters of movement of the obstacle. Then engineers have tried to equip the robots first square "shell", then the oval and round.

Experiments have shown that it is a round shell allows the mini-robot to overcome obstacles most successful, not pulling back. Round streamlined hull, according to scientists, allows the robot to reduce the resistance area. This effect is the development of the authors called "terradinamicheskoy rationalization."
