Deteriorating sight and hearing in old age is seen as a natural process. Age-related weakening of smell usually pay less attention. Researchers from Columbia University (Columbia University) have shown the crucial importance of blunting odor identification: if a person loses a skill unique to detect smells, the risk of death in him increases.

In a study of 1,169 participants in the insUrance program Medicare (for people over 65 years old) provided 40 strips with different odorants and asked them to identify each flavor, offering answers.

It was found that among subjects with the worst results in this questionnaire mortality over the next two years was 45%. At the same ones who get high scores on the questionnaire, this figure was only 18%.

These data confirm previous observations of researchers that the loss of smell - is an important prognostic factor of premature death.

However, the researchers did not ascribe magical bow predictive gift. Apparently, the olfactory receptors of the first to respond to a more generalized processes in the body. The study left several questions open. For example, it is unclear what is the relationship with the duration of the lives of young and middle-aged people, if they have a smell disorder.

Previously, it was shown that smell can be used for the "prediction" and measure memory and female fertility.
