Robot-Guepard Cheetah learned to jump over obstacles - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Sunday, 07 June 2015 12:00

Scientists at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have trained four-legged robot, code-named Cheetah (in translation from English - the cheetah) alone to jump over the barriers on the run.

The advanced version of Cheetah is able to recognize and overcome obstacles up to 40 centimeters.

The machine detects the presence of obstacles in using lidar - a laser radar, similar to those installed in modern unmanned vehicles.

Cheetah responsible for the actions of three algorithms. The first obstacle determines and evaluates its height, and the distance to it. Second decide where you want the Cheetah at the beginning of the jump, and corrects the robot, so that he could take the required position. The third algorithm calculates the force with which you need to jump, to cope with the task.

According to the creators, Cheetah was the first chetyrehlapym robot that can independently run and jump at the same time.

Earlier Cheetah algorithms have been optimized so that the machine alone can develop faster than the speed athlete USAin Bolt is the fastest runner in the world.

In 2009, Bolt set a world record in the 100 meters. Its peak speed of the test was 44.7 kilometers per hour. Cheetah also learned to move at a speed of 45 kilometers per hour (in true cheetahs, this figure may reach 112-120 kilometers per hour).

During the project meets the company Boston Dynamics, which in December 2013 with funding Google. Initially, the money allocated for the development of Cheetah Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA at the Pentagon.
