American geologist discovered plant, accurately indicates the presence of kimberlite pipes under the soil impenetrable jungles of West Africa. Kimberlite pipes - vertical geological body is formed in the breakout gases through the Earth's crust, a sort of ancient volcanoes to destroy the underground part. Up to 90 percent of the diamonds of the crust is in kimberlite pipes. Residents of West Africa sifted river sediment in search of rare diamonds, got to the surface, but a systematic search of kimberlite pipes in the dense jungle until it was impossible.

Stephen Haggerty (Stephen Haggerty), engaged in exploration in Liberia since 1970, sought indicating kimberlite minerals, extracting soil samples of corrugated steel rods. In 2013, scientist found kimberlite pipe length of 500 and 50 meters wide, which has already produced four diamond.

Haggerty drew attention to the kind of plant that is present in the soil just above the tube. Its location in the air stilted roots resemble the mangrove plants, and long leaves are used by local residents as a roofing material. Haggerty exchanged letters with botanists from the UK and US, which have identified the plant as a kandelyabrovy Pandan (Pandanus candelabrum) - Representative of the poorly known family that occurs from Cameroon to Senegal.

Geologists have found pandan still over one kimberlite pipe. Perhaps the plant is adapted to the kimberlite soils rich in magnesium, potassium and phosphorus - the natural fertilizers. Haggerty now looking for ways to recognize pandan kandelyabrovy on satellite imagery.

For West African countries affected by years of war and epidemics of Ebola, mining of diamonds from kimberlite pipes can be an important source of foreign exchange earnings, while causing minimal damage to the environment. "Liquid industrial waste kimberlite no more toxic than garden fertilizer", - says the scientist. Finally, the Pandavas could help geologists and Brazil - a country with a similar climate, where in the jungle just hiding kimberlite pipes.
