Ocean of Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, is suitable for life and filled with baking soda and salt - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 09 May 2015 06:00

Ice Ocean Enceladus contains large amounts of salt and baking soda, which indicates stormy geothermal processes at its bottom. This also means that there Saturn potential sources of food and energy for life in the form in which we know it.

"The fact that the interaction of metal species and the ocean will also lead to the separation of hydrogen molecules. Astrobiologists today believe the key to this process is the origin of life, as the hydrogen at the same time contributes to the formation of amino acids and is a source of food for the microbes. Therefore, the discovery of geothermal processes on Enceladus makes it even more attractive candidate for the role of the second chamber of life in the solar system, "- said Christopher Glayn (Christopher Glein) of the Carnegie Institute for Science in Washington, DC (USA).

Glayn and his colleagues came to this conclusion, try to "taste" of water on Enceladus data collected instruments probe "Cassini". The unit carried out an analysis of the flyby past Saturn and its rings, which are partly composed of emissions from the surface of this planet.

As shown by measurements, Enceladus emissions contain an unusually high number of carbon dioxide and other compounds that prompted planetary scientists to believe that the water of the ocean it contain a lot of dissolved mineral salts.

Using the information from the mass spectrometers and gas analyzers "Cassini" Glayn and his colleagues built a computer model of Enceladus ocean, with which they calculated its acidity and other chemical properties.

It turned out that subglacial water world of Saturn's Moon has a number of traits that simultaneously unites it, and make it so different from Earth's water. For example, as the oceans of our planet, water is salty Enceladus - they contain about the same share of common salt (NaCl).

On the other hand, he has two very unusual features - Ocean Saturnian Moon contains a huge amount of soda. It shows a fairly high level of alkalinity of water (pH factor of 11-12). The latest discovery means that Enceladus has an ocean conditions are extremely favorable for life, according to RIA Novosti.

Maintaining an alkaline medium, and high concentration of sodium in the water at the global level, according to the study authors, is only possible if at the bottom of Enceladus occur so-called reaction serpentizatsii, chemical exchange between water and hot rocks. During these processes fall into the ocean molecule of carbon dioxide and metal ions, and the hydrogen molecule.

According Glayna and his colleagues, the closest analog Enceladus ocean in the world is exotic soda Mono Lake in California. In its waters there is life in the form of crustaceans and unusual microbes, whose ability to withstand high doses of arsenic in the medium gave rise to the famous scandal with "arsenic life" in 2010.

The presence of warm and rich in hydrogen, "soda" ocean on Enceladus, according Glayn and colleagues, making it by far the main candidate for the source of a "second life" in the solar system. According to scientists, the example of Mono Lake in practice proves that unicellular and multicellular life could exist and even thrive in such conditions.
