Geophysics concluded that 2.4 billion years ago, the average surface temperature does not exceed -40 degrees Celsius. Experts examined the contents of the isotopes of oxygen (the number of nucleons 16 and 18) in the meteorite samples, which were in the melt water of the ancient glaciers. To do this, scientists have studied the breed age 700 million years have been found in China, and the age of rocks 2.4 billion years old, found in the north-west Russia. Previously, these areas are in close proximity to the equator of the Earth and were part of a single supercontinent.

As the researchers note, the structure of glaciers, traces of which are found in China, resembles that of the south of Greenland, while the discovery in Russia suggests the presence on Earth 2.4 billion years, much lower average temperatures. In this case, the thickness of the ice on the planet is equal to several hundred meters.

There is a hypothesis "Snowball Earth", popular among some scientists, involves glaciation of the Earth in the Neoproterozoic era (from thoUSAnds to 500 million years ago). A new study pushes that time about half a billion years ago.

Currently, the average surface temperature is 30 degrees Celsius. Scientists note that the extreme conditions on the planet billions of years ago could affect the evolution of organisms. Experts do not exclude the possibility that the world could exist regions with not only solid, but also liquid water, which could be life, given impetus to the development after the volcanic activity.

The presence of such conditions on the ancient Earth gives scientists optimistic: they believe that on cold exoplanets, as well as the bodies of the solar system, where there is water, it is also possible existence of life.
