Fighters from US aircraft carriers will run by huge electromagnets - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 25 March 2015 23:59

Almost the entire history of its existence, aircraft carriers equipped with steam catapults to launch aircraft in the air. It's amazing archaic technology - especially when it can help run a stealth fighters worth more than $ 20 million each.

Currently, the US Navy is testing a new system, called Electromagnetic aircraft Launch System (EMALS), aboard the aircraft carrier USS «Gerald R. Ford». It uses pulses of electromagnetic energy for much more efficient runs than the old steam catapults.

To begin with, that the steam catapult occupy too much space and weigh over half a ton. They require a long time to recharge after each "shot", while they themselves are getting enough convulsive starts. Steam systems can not provide smooth acceleration, and this results in increased wear corps aircraft. In addition - and this is a bit surprising - steam catapults used more energy than the system EMALS. Daylight electromagnetic linear accelerators gives a much smoother acceleration, high reliability and a much more efficient design.

EMALS platform uses an electric current to generate a magnetic field that scatter the carriage along the guide rails embedded in the runway. Attach the plane - and you get an electromagnetic catapult. EMALS already tested with the F / A-18, E2D Advanced Hawkey, and future F-35 among other models. An important aspect of the new system is that operators can fine tune the speed start in accordance with the weight of the aircraft.
