Jet engine printed on 3D-printer - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 28 February 2015 03:00

Australian scientists and technicians the world's first 3D-printed on the printer operating a jet engine. This was reported in the press release Monash University.

University and its subsidiary Amaero contracted with the French aerospace giant Safran, and he provided them with an auxiliary power unit (turbine engine), which is used by private jet - primarily on the Dassault Falcon 20. The engine design was developed in the 1960s and therefore no drawings for him electronically.

For this reason, researchers from the Center for additive technology at the University spent several months studying the internal structure of the engine and scan details. Then they published 14 principal components - titanium, aluminum and nickel alloy. The entire project took a year, with the print engine took only 30 days.

Scientists have made two copies of the jet engine. One of them exhibited at the International Australian Airshow, which is being held in Melbourne Avalon Airport, and the other - in Toulouse, at the headquarters of Microturbo, «Daughter» Safran. In the future, the researchers plan to test the individual components of the engine in real flight conditions.
