Physicists from Belgium and France proposed an experiment in which using the nuclear reactor they would like to find neutrons trapped in our Universe from another.

Scientists in their work used a three-dimensional representation of the observed world (our three-dimensional brane) as embedded in a multidimensional space ("hyper"). This theory, which was first proposed in the 1920s by German physicists Theodor Kaluza and Oskar Klein, is included in modern string theory and extensions of the Standard Model with extra dimensions.

Researchers have suggested that there is a neutron, which can be described as a superposition of quantum states of a particle on our brane and in the neighboring. As the measurement procedure (in this case, finding out where the neutron), the authors proposed the use of nuclear collisions in the reactor.

When neutrons interact with the nuclei of the reactor, the superposition collapses and the neutron is a chance for one of the branes. Register particles emitted from the reactor (in our brane) scientists propose a detector based on helium-3.

An important objective of the experiment is the isolation of the desired neutron among those which have been initially in the reactor. Scientists note that the original number of such particles in the installation is easy to calculate, and the protection of the reactor and the detector to minimize the impact of the background (you hit the detector contaminants).

Neutrons also interact with gravitational fields. Their small changes (eg, due to deviations from the circular orbit of the Earth) can lead to the destruction of superposition. On the one hand, this may affect the experiment, and on the other, it can use it. To this end, the scientists propose to take into account the annual motion of the Earth, which can trigger release of the neutron state corresponding to its location in our Universe.

For their experiments, physicists want to use a reactor at the Institute Laue Langevin in Grenoble. Similar experiments, but with photons, have been previously proposed by other scientists. Their experiments have so far failed.
