Living organisms can exist at a depth of 19 kilometers beneath the earth's surface - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail

Life is teeming everywhere - even in the darkest depths of the ocean. How deep she can sink? According to the group of researchers led by Philippa Stoddard of Yale University, living organisms can exist at a depth of 19 kilometers below the Earth's surface - that is, in conditions of extreme temperature and high pressure.

Evidence of this are the specific isotopes of carbon, discovered by researchers in ancient rocks on the coast of the island of aragonite Lopez in Washington State, USA. Minerals may have formed under the influence of fluid which contained methane microbial origin. Methane emitted by living organisms, has a different ratio of carbon isotopes than methane, which is released from rocks.

According to Philip Stoddard, underground environment can no longer favor the development of extraterrestrial life, protecting it from cosmic radiation and extreme temperatures on the surface. This is worth remembering in the study of other planets, scientists say.

Recently, NASA experts said that the shrimp species Rimicaris hybisae, living in the Caribbean, can help to learn more about life on other planets. These creatures live in hydrothermal vents at a depth of 2.2 km, where the water meets the magma. Shrimp live in a fairly cool water, but feed on bacteria that inhabit the vents, where the temperature is high. Bacteria have adapted to survive in such conditions, which may indicate the presence of such forms of life on other planets and satellites, for example, on Jupiter's Moon - Europe - where, perhaps, there is the ocean.
