Observations in the infrared have allowed astronomers to see through the dust-filled central regions of our galaxy and discover the many hidden from our view objects. Shamrock famous nebula appears in a new photo taken VISTA survey telescope of the European Southern Observatory, in a completely new ghostly image.


As part of a major southern hemisphere sky surveys performed VISTA telescope at the Paranal Observatory, conducted mapping of the central regions of our galaxy in the infrared part of the spectrum with the aim of finding new hidden objects. In this case, the same areas again periodically removed to reveal the changes in brightness of objects. The project was called "VVV Survey" (VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea).

Very tiny part of the project received huge amounts of data is the new snapshot famous nebula M20, otherwise known as Shamrock due ghostly dark bands that divide it into clearly visible in a telescope three parts, making the object look like clover leaves. Only in this tiny section of astronomers have discovered two previously unknown class of variable stars Cepheids, are in the same direction as the Shamrock nebula far beyond it. This is the first discovery of this class of stars in the plane of our galaxy is its central bulge.

On famous photographs of the nebula Shamrock made in the visible region of the spectrum, it shines bright reddish glow of ionized hydrogen and hazy blue glow of young, hot stars. Also clearly stand out huge clouds of dust that absorb light. However, in the infrared nebula takes on a whole different look. It becomes like a ghost of an object that is visible in ordinary light. Dust clouds in the infrared are practically invisible, since this range they are almost transparent, shining hydrogen cloud barely discernible, and the structure of the three lobes are not seen at all.

But, as if to compensate for the lost entertainment nebula, a new picture unfolds a magnificent panorama. Thick dust veil of the disk of the galaxy, absorbing visible light, well lets most of the infrared rays trapped receiving array telescope VISTA. Nebula became transparent, and we can now see what is behind it, and register on the opposite edge of the Milky Way, the objects of which no one has ever seen.

The figure shot just has such a wonderful surprise. It looks very close to Shamrock nebula, and in fact almost seven times on her visible pair of variable stars. This Cepheids - unstable bright stars, periodically slowly increasing and reducing its luster. Period changes in their brightness is 11 days. The couple - the brightest star cluster members. At the moment, the only Cepheid found so close to the plane of the Milky Way, with its far side.
