Scientists have learned how to teleport objects using 3D-printer - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 29 January 2015 16:40

In Hasso Plattner Institute, Germany presented a prototype device that can teleport objects at a distance with the help of 3D-printing. The device is called "Scotty" in honor of teleportation system operator from the series "star Trek."

The system works is very simple: the first 3D-printer Makerbot Replicator digitizes the object with the camera, destroying it sends the encrypted instructions a second printer that prints the object elsewhere. And acts "Scotty" layers: milling machine inside the printer cuts each layer of the object only after sending photos to the second printer.

The user need only place the object in the system, select the recipient and click "Move". Engineers emphasize that the purpose of their project - preservation of unique things. Destruction of objects that friends share with each other, increasing their emotional value: instead of a copy

However, the main technological challenge system is to combat piracy. Development of 3D-printing leads to the fact that the scheme of manufacturing facilities can illegally distributed and things - replicated. The destruction of the original ensures that thing seller (customer online store eBay, for example) disappears at the same time with a hit to the buyer.

The possibilities are limited prototype. "Scotty" works only with plastic, and painted black (to increase the contrast). However, progress in the field of 3D-printing is to expand the range of items suitable for this kind of teleportation.
