Changes in the structure of ice in the Arctic from 1987 to 2014 - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 27 January 2015 11:41

In NOAA prepared animations showing the movement and changes in the structure of ice in the Arctic Ocean from 1987 to 2014. Ice on the video shows shades of blue - the darkest means "fresh", formed next winter, and the white color corresponds to long-term ice age more than 9 years.

NOAA notes that in the 21st century began the decline in multi-year ice: in 2008 he began to build a thin line along the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

While the area of multi-year ice has increased between 2013 and 2014, long-term trend remains negative. In the 1980s, the oldest ice (age 4 years and over) was 26 per cent of the cover; in March 2014 it was 10 percent. And as the animation shows, very old ice (7-8 years or more) became even rarer.
