New way for search of extraterrestrial intelligence a researchers have proposed - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail

Engineer David Messerschmitt University of California at Berkeley proposed to change the strategy of searching for possible signals from extraterrestrial civilizations.

The project SETI (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) search for signals from extraterrestrial intelligent beings are carried out in a narrow frequency range. Scientists believe that a technologically advanced civilization in the course of business, is capable of producing radiation with a wavelength of 21 centimeters (and the corresponding frequency of about 1420 megahertz).

This frequency corresponds to a super-slim metastable transition between two states of the hydrogen atom, which differ in the relative orientation of the magnetic moments of the electron and the nucleus (consisting of one proton). Objects SETI (radio telescopes across the Earth) and diverted to other frequencies, but have always been focused on the search for a signal in a narrow range.

Messerschmitt believes that the energy costs of extraterrestrial civilizations in the continuous signal transmission in a narrow range may be too large and therefore unprofitable. It makes more sense to look for single and short signals in a wide frequency range, the researchers note.

For this purpose, an engineer proposes to reconfigure the receiving equipment observatories, as well as modify the software responsible for processing the received data. In this Messerschmitt believes that it is not necessary to completely give up the search for extraterrestrial civilizations traces in a narrow range.

SETI project is supervised by the University of California at Berkeley and is being implemented with support from NASA. It involves many scientific organizations from around the world. The idea of searching for signals from intelligent possible inhabitants of other planets originated in the late 1950s, and the first regular research began in the 1970s. To date, the SETI could not find traces of extraterrestrial civilizations.
