American scientists have developed a mechanism, destroying genetically modified organisms in contact with the external environment: their genetic code rewritten in such a way that they can not reproduce without synthetic amino acids.

genetically engineered microorganisms are used extensively in Europe, the US and China for the production of medicines and biofuels. Scientists have developed security measures to enable them to restrain the reproduction conditions in the less predictable than a bioreactor, for example in the purification of sea or oil stains as drugs in humans.

Research team Farren Isaacs (Farren Isaacs) from Yale University rewrote the genome of E. coli Escherichia coli in several places that it depended on the synthetic amino acid. Without the latter RNA bacteria can not be converted into proteins.

Scientists believe that the new technology should be developed and applied to other species - genetically modified plants and even animals. "Our work has shown that the genomes of transcoding and the creation of synthetic amino acids, depending on the technically possible not only with E. coli, but also with other bacteria and multicellular organisms, including plants," - says Isaacs.

Nevertheless, many scientists reacted to such claims with skepticism. "The more genes in the body, the greater the likelihood of unintended consequences. Church and Isaacs provided a very elegant work ... but the genetic system of plants and animals, and even yeast is fundamentally different from that of bacteria, "- noted botanist Alison Smith (Alison Smith) from Cambridge.
