Comet Lulin (C / 2007 N3 Lulin) visible to the naked eye from Earth - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 21 January 2015 12:15

comet Lulin (C / 2007 N3 Lulin) opened in 2007, Chinese astronomers. On Tuesday, she approached the Earth at the shortest distance - 61 million miles away, it can be seen with the naked eye in the constellation Leo, the brightness of the stars of the fifth magnitude.

According to scientists, at the beginning of the week the comet comes closer to Saturn, and 27 February will be south of Regulus (Alpha Leo) at a distance of half a degree. Earlier in the pictures of the comet could be seen two tails - plasma and dust, and in early February, scientists have recorded an unusual phenomenon - the separation of the plasma tail of a comet under the influence of magnetic disturbances in the solar wind.

comet Lulin was opened in July 2007, two astronomers Chuan Zhi E (Quanzhi Ye) and Chi Sheng Lin (Chi Sheng Lin), and it was named in honor of Taiwan's Lulin Observatory, where he worked for one of them. In addition, this comet unlike other such bodies that are visible from Earth, has never approached the Sun as close as it is now. Lulin moves in the opposite direction to the movement of other planets and solar system objects. This creates an optical illusion - from Earth seems that the comet approaches the Sun and our planet "tail" forward.
