Three-dimensional tactile hologram will cause a revolution in the technology of virtual reality - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail

The next big breakthrough in virtual reality can become "tactile hologram" - technology using sound waves, which enable a person to feel virtual objects.

Adding a touch of the unreal world, as well as more advanced visual and audio technology replication embody a futuristic vision of an inclusive virtual world, which is no different from reality.

Work with three-dimensional, tactile holograms involved researchers from the University of Bristol in the UK. A team led by Ben Long has refined its previous technology UltraHaptics. Now, high frequency sound waves emitted by an array of tiny speakers, create a sense of touch to the invisible, floating in the air object.

Sound waves exert pressure on the skin of the user when they come to hand. The motion sensor is used to determine the position of the user's hand, so the system may transmit ultrasound frequency desired at the right time, which gives a sense of touch.

This process is still very raw. Tactile hologram can be created only simple forms, but, according to Long, a more complex system can create more complex tactile sensations in the virtual reality environment.
