NASA signed a contract for the extraction of minerals on asteroids - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 27 November 2014 16:03

NASA has signed contracts with two private firms to prepare for unprecedented missions to asteroids to mine of minerals. Both companies plan to launch probes to extract resources from the Earth at minded sites.
Despite the fact that such an expedition could theoretically deliver valuable minerals on Earth, NASA still plans to use these resources for other space projects - such as the International Space Station - water, carbon minerals and other resources. This approach may help to save the agency time and money.

In view of the fact that the asteroids have weak gravity, landing and launching their spacecraft surfaces is less resource-intensive task than on Earth.

"Today bring one ton of cargo at geosynchronous orbit is worth $ 17 million. If we can bring down the price by 2022, we will be successful in the market "- said the representative of the Deep Space Industries - one of the firms that received the contract.

The representative of another firm - Planetary Resources - in turn adds: "asteroids contain the resources needed to create a sustainable or even a permanent presence in space - for the purpose of science, trade and prosperity of the Earth."

In the wake of the historic landing of the European Space Agency probe to the comet Churyumov-Gerasimenko, NASA will attempt to put a spacecraft OSIRIS-Rex asteroid Bennu in September 2016.
