Unusual glowing worm found in the jungles of Peru - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Tuesday, 25 November 2014 10:10

Wildlife photographer Jeff Kremer (Jeff Cremer) discovered a new species of bioluminescent larvae. A few years ago he was walking at night near the campground, broken in the Peruvian forests, and suddenly came across a little green luminous spots on earth. Taking a closer look photographer realized that each point - is the head of a worm, whose length with little body is about 1.2 centimeters.

Jeff asked for help from an entomologist Aaron Pomerantz (Aaron Pomerantz), who collected the samples and began to study them. Soon, the scientist realized that these worms - larvae of an unknown species of beetle, perhaps related to the fireflies.

As it turned out, night glow serves only one purpose - it attracts prey. Larvae long waiting with wide-open jaws, yet they are not attracted by light zapolzut small flies, termites or ants. Under laboratory conditions, Pomeranz discovered that there are brought together the jaws when they regard any small object. In the wild, the larvae live in the ground, sticking to the surface of a head (for kormёzhki).

Members of the research team still do not know what grows out of the luminous beetle larvae. They do not even believe that this kind known to science (and it is possible that adults feed on nectar, and only larvae - predators).

Everything in nature about 10 thoUSAnd species of click beetles, 200 of which bioluminescent. These strange little creatures could be potential relatives Brazilian ognetsvetok and belong to a group Pyrophorini.

Entomologists believe that larvae shine through the luciferin - exactly the same compound is used fireflies.
