In the summer of 2014 received the highest temperature on the surface of the ocean in the history of conducting systematic measurements - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail

Last summer, scientists have recorded the highest temperature on the surface of the ocean in the history of conducting systematic measurements. Such data are voiced by representatives of the International Pacific Research Center, acting at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Studies show that since 2000 and up until last year, the increase in the average temperature of the ocean surface is not observed, the concentration of greenhouse gases continue to rise. This period, which scientists call "the calm of global warming," has caused serious public and scientific interest. However, 13 years later, in April 2014, the process of warming ocean waters again began to gain momentum and as a result broke the record for 1998, which the scientific community is known as "El Niño year."

As explained climatologist Axel Timmermann, Professor, University of Hawaii, the warming of the oceans in 2014, mainly due to the unprecedented heat of the North Pacific Ocean.

Scientists describe the events that led to a significant rise in temperature, as follows: the temperature of the surface water began to grow extremely rapidly outside of the tropics in the North Pacific in January 2014, a few months later - in April - May - westerly winds shifted a huge amount of very warm water (usually remain in the Western Pacific) along the equator to the eastern Pacific Ocean. These warm water spread along the Pacific coast of North America and released into the atmosphere huge amounts of heat trapped in the former western tropical Pacific for almost a decade.
Further increase in temperature of the oceanic surface helped record the concentration of greenhouse gases, as well as abnormally weak summer trade winds in the North Pacific. They are usually cooled surface of the ocean.

"Warm temperatures now spread wide band from the north of Papua New Guinea to the Gulf of Alaska," - says Axel Timmermann, stressing that the period of "calm global warming," apparently finalized.
