U.S. Department of Defense will create space fence until 2018- VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 11 June 2014 20:00

The company Lockheed Martin, the largest contractor of the Ministry of Defense, is going to start deploying aerospace surveillance system called "Space Fence". Practical need for such a project is long overdue, and the reason was the huge amount of debris accumulated in Earth orbit. The most conservative estimates now revolves around the Earth half a million debris satellites, rocket stages and other man-made debris that consistently sent into space since 1957, when the Soviet Union launched the first artificial satellite. The speed with which they roam the expanses of space is about 27,000 kilometers per hour. Colliding with each other, fragments break into smaller pieces, creating a whole trash field, which some experts call the "cascade of collisions." That, as it happens, is shown in the presentation of Lockheed Martin. Until now, mankind had no way to track the trajectory of the debris that poses a threat equally for manned and unmanned space operations. For example, in April, the scientists had to change the orbit of the International Space Station, to prevent a collision with space debris: ISS threatened meeting spent part of the European rocket "Ariane 5", so the station had to "raise" approximately 800 meters. And five years ago, unscheduled meeting of Russian and American satellites over Siberia cost the lives of both: the collision of a non-functioning Russian satellite and its American counterpart of the global system for mobile Iridium turned into two huge clouds of debris that now pose a hazard to spacecraft. A similar fate at any moment can trap whatever object in Earth orbit, for example, to realize the story Oscar-winning film "Gravity". To prevent such situations, and will be created Space Fence. New ground-based radar system, located in the Marshall Islands, will monitor and catalog all the space debris. It will replace the current Air Force surveillance system, launched in 1960, and the ability to track only a small fraction of waste - no more than 20 000 of 500 000. Space Fence must earn in 2018, VIDEO:
