In the Invertebrate Biology magazine was published an article of scientists from Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI), which describes the discovery of a new deep-sea invertebrates Chondrocladia lyra, which belongs to the class of ordinary sponge and lives on the ocean floor at a depth of more than three kilometers. As reported, this previously unknown species of invertebrates is the genus of carnivorous sponges Chondrocladia, therefore, because it looks very similar to a harp or lyre, it was named Chondrocladia lyra. Sponge Chondrocladia lyra held on the ocean floor with rhizoids, consisting of thin branches that radiate in all directions from the center. Unlike other sponges, sponge-harp Chondrocladia lyra is a predator and catches its prey with special spikes and hooks, located on its branches, and then entangles caught prey and slowly digesting it, VIDEO:
