According to the press service of the Russian Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute of Hydromet (AARI), the participants of the 57th Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE) are prepared to resume drilling the deepest ice borehole 5G in Antarctica and the remaining 50 meters of ice. So in early 2012, the Russian scientists will be able to obtain samples of water ice of Vostok Lake, located beneath a layer of ice as thick as four kilometers in the Antarctic. Note, that the subglacial Lake Vostok is the only place on Earth, where located an ecosystem, that existed on Earth several million years ago, so the first time ever, scientists in 2012 will be able to receive the specimens of ancient viruses and bacteria, which were distributed on the Earth yet in the era of dinosaurs. Although no one knows, how will be dangerous of these samples of the ancient Earth's flora, so the drill will be conducted with great care. At the moment, Russian scientists at the Russian station in Antarctica were drilled 3720 meters of chink and when to the surface of the subglacial lake was about 50 meters, drilling was suspended, but now it is reported, that drilling to subglacial lake Vostok will resume on January 2, 2012. Drilling of ice at such great depths was carried out only by Russian scientists and Russian equipment can only cope with extreme conditions in Antarctica to complete drilling to subglacial Vostok lake. To resume drilling, the research unit, headed by Nikolai Vasilev, the chair of drilling of the State Mining University of Russia, has already begun testing equipment for drilling. Participants of the 57th Russian Antarctic Expedition (RAE) set out from St. Petersburg on the vessel "Akademik Fedorov" inNovember 8, 2011, but only now was officially confirmed the feasibility of resuming drilling to subglacial Vostok Lake.
