Coffee does not harm heart - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail

Large-scale monitoring of the health of several thoUSAnd people who suffer from atrial fibrillation of the heart, showed that coffee consumption does not contribute to the development of problems with the cardiovascular system, according to a paper published in the journal BMC Medicine. Atrial fibrillation - one of the most common diseases associated with cardiac arrhythmias. It can lead to blood clots, and cardiac arrest. Thrombus formation due to atrial disorders usually occurs in the left atrial appendage. These blood clots can get through the blood to various organs, including the brain and cause ischemic stroke. SUSAnna Larsson (SUSAnna Larsson) of the Karolinska Institute in Uppsala (Sweden) and her colleagues found that drinking coffee and other caffeinated beverages is not conducive to the development of the disease, having a huge scale observational program, which was attended by about 80 thoUSAnd citizens of the United States and Sweden, and which lasted more than 12 years. As part of the monitoring of the scientists interviewed participants in the experiment, how often they drink coffee, and watching over the health of their heart and blood vessels. According to the researchers, from atrial fibrillation affects about seven thoUSAnd men and women who agreed to participate in experiments, which accounted for about 9% of the total number of volunteers from the first wave of observations. The study showed that coffee consumption, even in very high doses, did not affect the health of people already suffering from cardiac arrhythmia, or have received it in 12 years of monitoring. To test these findings, the researchers used data from other studies devoted to this subject, as well as a new group of volunteers that the overall result has increased the number of participants in the experiments up to 250 thoUSAnd. Re-analysis corroborate the lack of connection between caffeine and heart problems, although it also revealed that it is very weak, but increased the chances of developing an arrhythmia in men, and a few reduced susceptibility to the disease in women. Larsson and her colleagues try to understand why this happens in the course of further observations. "Overall, we found no evidence that increased consumption of coffee may increase the risk of developing atrial fibrillation. This is important, since this discovery shows that people who love coffee and anxious about the health of the heart, can continue to drink it at least in moderation, without the risk of becoming a victim of this disease, "- concludes Larsson.
