How did the giant canals on Mars - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Monday, 14 September 2015 03:16
Famous Martian canal were not a product of the melting of the polar caps of the red planet, and the last traces of the remains of the oceans of Mars, "frozen" in the sedimentary rocks in the distant past and melted during volcanic eruptions 3.2 billion years ago. Network giant canyon on Mars, astronomers of the 19th century wrongly considered "channels Martians" were bred giant underground rivers that emerged 3.2 billion years ago as a result of the melting of the last remnants of the Martian ocean in the deepest canyons on its bottom, it said in an article published in the journal Scientific Reports. "We found that the sediments accumulated on the bottom of the oceans of Mars in the earliest stages of their existence, may be buried under a huge reserves of water from the surface of the planet. It is an event in itself could be the reason why Mars turned into an ice desert. Probably, In these deposits, some of which are now coming to the surface, traces of a medium capable of supporting life, "- said Alexis Rodriguez (Alexis Rodriguez) from Planetologicheskogo Institute in Tucson (USA). As explained Rodriguez, the last few decades, scientists believed, based on data collected by the spacecraft a series of "Viking" that the famous canals on the Martian surface have resulted from the melting of the southern polar cap of the red planet and the appearance of temporary river whose riverbed splash a line network from a variety of deep and wide canyons on its surface. The authors questioned this, as many channels are located far away from the South Pole, and their pattern in some places does not correspond to the way the water was flowing after the melting of the polar caps. In addition, a large number of channels present in the northern hemisphere of Mars, at a very great distance from the South Pole. Rodriguez and his colleagues tried to find the answer to this riddle by studying pictures of the channels on the northern plains of Rhys in the Valles Marineris and some other regions of Mars that have been studied by means of the probe MRO. After examining the structure of the channels, their location, number and arrangement of craters near them, geologists have uncovered two unusual things. Firstly, the channels in different tiers are from different sources, and were not linked. Second, they were located in the vicinity of those parts of the Plains, which in the past represented the bottom of the ocean. This led scientists to believe that in the deepest layers of rocks that had accumulated on the ocean floor, may hold frozen water, got back in the distant past, when Mars was warm and had a dense atmosphere.
