Light is an essential element of quantum communication, but it does have one drawback. It moves with great speed (approximately 300 thoUSAnd. Km / s) and has a steady state in which it could be stored. A group of scientists of the Vienna University of Technology was able to demonstrate that this problem can be solved. And not only did not receive more extensive use of complex quantum systems, but also in conventional fiber optic networks, which we already use today. In conventional glass fiber inventors injected additive, allowing the light to slow to 180 km / h. Even many trains go faster. In addition, the scientists were able to completely stop for a moment and then light to resume its movement. This is an important achievement, approximating the creation of so-called quantum Internet-based optical fiber, in which quantum information can "teleport" over long distances. More from school physics course, we know that the speed of light is slightly reduced during the passage of the rays through a medium other than vacuum, for example, water or glass. It slows down as a result of the interaction of photons with the atoms of the material. In the experiment, this effect is intensified many times. This was achieved by adding cesium atoms in the hyperfine fiberglass. When the laser beam passes through a medium is absorbed photon energy that provides a transition from the lowest energy state of high energy. But absorbed light at any time may uncontrollably "disposed of", which assumes no practical use. Therefore, scientists have applied additional control laser, which provides translation of atoms in a third state. With these three quantum states, scientists gained control of the established structures and are now able to store photons for some time (about two microseconds). "Captured" photons through two microseconds have been returned to normal fiber, maintaining its properties, which is a very important prerequisite for quantum communication. Interestingly, the quantum connection between the subscribers is safe from the point of view of information security, since to intercept the message and stay at this unnoticed will not work according to the fundamental laws of quantum physics.
