Giant virus found in Siberia - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Wednesday, 09 September 2015 14:58
French scientists from the University of Aix-Marseille managed to open a new kind of giant virus. He was found by a Russian-French expedition in Siberia, where he spent in the permafrost for 30,000 years. The new virus was named Mollivirus siberikum (Mollivirus sibericum). On the opening of said one of the coordinators of the study, published in the Memoirs of the Academy of Sciences of the United States, Jean-Michel Klavri. Mollivirus the fourth giant virus discovered by scientists. The first discovery was made in 1992, when biologists discovered Mimivirus (Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus). He holds the record for the size of the capsid until 2011, when Jean-Michel Claverie and Chantal Aberzhel off the coast of Chile found more larger megavirus (Megavirus chilensis). Later the same "monster" found off the coast of Australia. Giant viruses have a diameter greater than 0.5 microns and are easily observed through an optical microscope. They can be easily confused with the bacteria. But the most unusual feature was not their size and gene - only seven percent of its sequence appeared familiar to biologists. Since two of the four giant viruses have been found in the permafrost, professor Klavri encourages thinking about the danger of waking up like a giant virus from human activities in the Arctic regions during mineral exploration.
