Scientists discovered in the Pacific Ocean view of black coral that can live up to four thoUSAnd years. This term makes them the oldest centenarians among marine organisms of the planet.

Leiopathes annosa painted in golden brown color and the shape of its colonies resemble trees (which is typical for black coral). These animals live at a depth of 300-500 meters in the area of the Hawaiian Islands.

Coral-survivor has been known to scientists since the XVIII century, but previously it mistakenly ranked as the Mediterranean mean L. glaberrima. By comparing several samples of coral, scientists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and the National Museum of Natural History decided to take them to a new species.

Then, with the help of deep-sea manned submersibles "Paysis" oceanographers Leiopathes annosa collected samples at the National Maritime Papahanaumokuakea monument and determine their age. The dating of coral growth rings radiocarbon indicated that these animals can live more than four thoUSAnd years.

"Our study highlights how the new can be learned by studying the deep, remained intact ecosystem. It is about Papahānaumokuākea that still barely known scientists, "- said co-author Daniel Wagner (Daniel Wagner).
