American engineers create an unusual offer "flat" space ship that will be able to reach our nearest star - the Alpha Centauri - in just 20 years thanks to the original propulsion system based on laser, press-service of the University of California at Santa Barbara.

"One of the most important problems of mankind today - sending probes to other planetary systems, and the search for life in them. We propose to create a device that will allow us to take the first step toward interstellar travel using engines working on the principle of directional radiation energy" - says Philip Lubin (Philip Lubin) from the University of California.

Lubin and his colleagues have been working for several years, commissioned by NASA and grants, to create a technology that would allow us to leave the solar system and begin the study of distant stars and planets. The most promising is the project of developing a laser engine DEEP-IN and a special spacecraft that it will disperse.

This idea, as the scientist says, grew out of a project to destroy asteroids laser DE-star, which physicists from the University of Santa Barbara, presented to the public two years ago, almost simultaneously with the fall of the meteorite Chelyabinsk.

Laser engine as asteroid platform will be a set of thoUSAnds of microlasers, united in a phased array. This device will be connected not to the ship, and will be in orbit, playing the role of the primary booster module that will accelerate the probe, go to Alpha Centauri or other stars, to near-light speed a thoUSAnd times faster than it is now flying "Voyager".

Of course, this acceleration will not work for today's probes and manned spacecraft - a laser vaporize them, but not force to fly at very high speeds. To test DEEP-IN Lubin and his colleagues propose to build extremely flat probe of special reflective material, equipped with a kind of ultra thin and light graphene sail 30 meters in diameter.

This interstellar "sailboat", according to the calculations of American physicists will be able to reach Alpha Centauri for 20 years and will make flights between Mars and Earth in just three days without payload, and a month with a load of 10 tons. The main problem in this and in another case will brake drone - is the team Lubin no idea how to stop the laser "sailboat" safe.

"Although this strategy is not suitable for acceleration of all kinds of spacecraft, it opens up radically new possibilities for the study of space. Our project is the first step toward interstellar travel, and we are working on the technical implementation. We had to radically rethink the whole strategy development for not to give up the dream about to reach for the stars. DEEP-IN paves the way, which, despite its complexity, gives us the opportunity to start a process towards him "- concludes Lubin.
