Three to five cups of coffee a day reduces the risk of death from cardiovascular disease (CVD) by 21 percent, according to the authors of the report submitted to the Congress of the European Association for the prevention of CVD in Lisbon.

Scientists and physicians from the non-profit Institute for Scientific information on Coffee (Institute for Scientific information on Coffee) reviewed the latest medical research on the various factors of mortality from cardiovascular disease. It was found that the risk is lowest in those who drank an average of three cups of coffee a day. In addition, the same group of about 25 percent less likely to develop type II diabetes (in comparison with those who drink one or two cups per day, or even indulging in this drink). Diabetics, as the researchers note, are at high risk of CVD.

Finally, the five factors of a healthy lifestyle (proper diet, moderate alcohol consumption - 10-20 grams per day, smoking cessation, exercise, lack of central-type obesity) prevent 79 percent of myocardial infarction in men.

It is not known exactly how the coffee helps to prevent cardiovascular disease. Probably, it's an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant action of the drink, as well as reducing the risk of Type II diabetes among consumers of coffee. The researchers also point out regional differences: for example, the Japanese give the best protection two cups a day, the British and the Americans - three cups.
