Disappearance of snails is a signal of the beginning of a new mass extinction on Earth - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail

Scientists believe that, despite the fact that many vertebrates, especially mammals and birds, successfully survive in an era marked by the domination of human Anthropocene, invertebrates gradually disappear. According to the new estimates, about 7% of non-marine animals have already become extinct. Environmentalists estimate that the fault of human activity disappears in about a hundred species every day, that is the extent of biological catastrophe can be compared with the disappearance of the dinosaurs.

Interestingly, in the circumstances evidence of the actual extinction has always been rather vague. Thus, of the 1.3 million known species of invertebrates only about 800 species officially recognized as extinct. Whence arise such negative forecasts?

Rainier Claire (Claire Régnier) from the National Museum of Natural History in Paris and her colleagues argue that the extinction of invertebrate previously monitored by scientists mediocre. And despite the fact that these animals represent about 99% of the species diversity of our planet.

Rainier team to assess the loss of species of land snails applied to databases, museum collections and expertise. As a rule, land snails are considered animals with relatively good survival rates. But the survey found that about a tenth of them have already gone (all the known species, there are about two hundred).

On a small island inhabited by a large number of endemic snails, which are likely to become extinct or are on the verge of extinction. Their disappearance is not typical of other invertebrates, and partly due to the fact that many species are simply not have been described by researchers. At the same time, it is estimated that about 130 thoUSAnd non-marine invertebrate known to science have disappeared from the face of the Earth.

The experts considered the new scientific work troubling. It is likely that other invertebrate taxa are also on the verge of extinction, with their situation even more tragic.

This research approach can help to quickly and efficiently determine the rate of extinction and other invertebrates, but it does not answer the question of what is the number of unnamed and unknown species disappear before mankind in general know about their existence.

The scientific article Rainier group was published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

Earlier, the paleontologists found traces of the sixth mass extinction in Earth's history, offered another explanation for the mass extinction of the dinosaurs, was told that a "terrible lizards" on the light almost went all the bees, as well as experienced the extinction of ancient sharks and spiny bowhead whales.
