Young scientists from Tomsk Dmitry Prokopiev develop nuclear battery which is capable of operating in various gadgets up to 12 years without recharging. The invention is a graduate student at Tomsk Polytechnic University (TPU), has yet low power, so it can be used in electronic devices with low power consumption.

Prokopiev placed in a sealed enclosure filled with tritium, gallium arsenide 3D-detector. The device transforms the energy of the beta particles emitted by tritium, into electrical current. Already there are nuclear batteries of this type, but they used a silicon detector. Under the influence of radiation are relatively quickly lose their properties.

The main advantage of the invention Prokopiev - a long time. 12 years - the half-life of tritium. Functional properties of batteries with silicon detectors begin to deteriorate after three years of operation.

Prototypes of the detectors, which are the basis of improved batteries have been successfully tested at the Novosibirsk Institute of Nuclear Physics of Budker, as well as in the Siberian Physico-Technical Institute of the Tomsk State University.
