Biotechnology at Harvard University have successfully created the world's first bionic artificial limb rats raised her muscles, blood vessels and other components of the stem cells, according to a paper published in the journal Biomaterials.

Scientists do not set ourselves the task to grow the entire original leg as a whole, and therefore focused their attention on two of the most difficult parts of the course - the muscles and blood vessels.

By placing a "framework" and a set of muscle stem cells, blood vessels and connective tissue in a special bioreactor, the scientists got a few weeks a full course, except the absence of the nerves.

To test your legs scientists hooked up to electrodes her muscles, which caused a limb to fall when current is applied. The fingers, joints and muscles of the individual artificial legs moved successfully and, according to calculations the authors, they had comparable strength compared to the limbs of the newborn rodent.

Now scientists are trying to grow in the same way the primacy of artificial hand, using as a "backbone" of amputees baboon, and think about how you can solve the problem with the sprouting of nerve endings in the limbs.

According to Ott, this problem can be solved by itself.
