Transplant of the head will help people to gain an immortality - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail
Saturday, 06 June 2015 06:00

Brain transplant is a step towards immortality, says the Italian neurosurgeon, who plans to hold the first transplant of a human head. Kanavero Sergio (Sergio Canavero) became known to the world after being told the press about his incredible project.

Sergio Kanavero hopes to hold its first such operation in 2017. Already even found a potential donor, expressed his willingness to go under the surgeon's knife. Nevertheless, many experts it plans provoked widespread condemnation. They are critical to the operation itself and the associated ethical implications.

In an interview with CNN president of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons Bate Hunt (Hunt Batjer) compared the operation to transplant the head (or body) of a person's death.

I would not wish this to anyone, especially not let anyone do this to me, because there are things worse than death.

In turn, he told the publication Kanavero LaPresse.it, he found sponsors willing to finance his project, as well as doctors and surgeons who wish to participate in the operation.

If you are investing in the project, it means that he believes. Otherwise, no one would invest in it their money - said the surgeon, noting that the operation will require about $ 10 million investment and 150 personnel, including doctors and their assistants.

The operation will last about two days. The cooled head will be removed from the mother of the patient, and transplanted to the body of the donor, neatly connecting blood vessels and glue the ends of the spinal cord.

After surgery, the patient will stay in a coma for about a month, so that the body stronger. To strengthen the neural connections will be stimulated spinal cord implanted electrodes.

Transplanted the head will be cooled to a temperature of 12 degrees Celsius. Then we separate the two head - the blood vessels, muscles, and bones - and begin to phase in which the patient will receive a new body.

Kanavero says transplant surgery of the head (or body) may be the first step towards immortality:
We are one step closer to the increase in human life expectancy for an indefinite period, as 80-year-old patient who received a new body will be able to live an additional 40 years.

The scientist believes that improvements in technology will take about five years, after which it will have "unimaginable consequences" and "forever change the history of mankind."

Responding to the criticism, Kanavero noted that his opponents feel threatened, because they could not achieve the same results. He also says that people are psychologically difficult to accept for the operation, as they are afraid of immortality.

Yet, according to the surgeon, people worry that transplant surgery of the head will be the prerogative of the rich.
