Scientists for the first time managed to photograph the thunder - the sound waves created artificially formed by lightning. Sound waves are formed when an electrical current (lightning) travels from the negatively charged cloud to ground.

This produces shock waves that we call thunder. Scientists at the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio (USA) have created their own lightning in the laboratory. They set fire to the copper wire in Kevlar shell in an electrically charged cloud, using a small rocket. Formed as a result of lightning passed across the wire to the ground. With 15 highly sensitive microphones, laid out 95 meters from the strike zone, the scientists recorded the sound waves produced by the speaker and created a map of a lightning strike.

Then, dividing the frequencies of the sounds, the researchers reproduced the sound of thunder portrait. Sound ranged from sharp clicks are recorded close to the site of impact microphones, to a long rumble, which was recorded at a far distance. Scientists believe that the study on the Thunder in the future will help to measure the energy of the lightning discharge.
