An international team of biotechnologists for the first time been able to attach to bacteria nanodevices and make them work together, making the microbe in some primitive sort of "cyborg". Now microorganism is able to carry out simple research, said in an article published in the journal Scientific Reports.

"It's really an amazing device. Look, we have the living cells in the form of spores. We have collected on the surface of the sensor, and these bacteria have played a very important role in the operation of the device. Furthermore, their biological component was the part of the sensor, which was responsible for reaction to stimuli and provided information "- says in a press release from Vikas Berry of the University of Illinois at Chicago.



Berry and his colleagues called his device NERD (Eng. "Nerd"), which represents a reduction of nanoelectronic a robot. It is a "sleeping" bacteria that scientists forced to play the role of a highly sensitive humidity sensor through a series of nanostructures placed on its surface.

The operation of this sensor is based on one simple fact - solid shell of bacterial spores is extremely sensitive to the presence of water molecules, and significantly expands with increasing concentration of water vapor in the air or water droplets in the surrounding area.

Shell extension microbe causes a change in the electrical conductivity of graphene strips and electrodes, which is why quantum dots - tiny light sources - will shine much brighter or dimmer.

According to Berry, their kiberbakteriya react to the slightest changes in humidity is about 10 times faster than do most sensitive sensors based on polymer materials.
