Mysterious white spots on the asteroid Ceres explained by scientists - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail

Planetary scientists have found a possible explanation of the nature of white spots on the surface of Ceres, and observed the telescope Hubble space probe Dawn. About this planetary scientists reported at the Conference on lunar and planetary sciences at Texas.

Scientists have concluded that the spectral characteristics of the radiation suggests that the spots formed ice. Probably, they are struck by the action of Sunlight emit water vapor. This mechanism resembles that of a comet, which under the action of light is emitted into the environment its matter.

The heaviest object in the asteroid belt is about a third of ice. Its main mass is concentrated in kriomantii covering a rocky core. Scientists believe that the machine Dawn, performing maneuvers near Ceres, would establish the exact nature of the mysterious stains.

The main objective of the mission is to study the Dawn of Ceres and the asteroid Vesta, near which the unit was in August of 2011 during the year. During this time, Dawn surveyed the asteroid's surface, allowing to create the first high-precision map of the cosmic body.

Dawn reached Ceres Station 6 March 2015 approximately at 05:39 Pacific Time (16:39 Moscow time). The probe itself was launched on 27 September 2007, by carrier rocket from the Baikonur Delta 2 at Cape Canaveral. The project cost is approximately $ 500 million.

In 2006, at the XXVI General Assembly of the International Astronomical Union decided to include asteroids Ceres not, as previously thought, but a dwarf planet.

Ceres was discovered in 1801 by Italian Giuseppe Piazzi and is named after the Roman goddess of fertility. The diameter of the space object is 950 kilometers, making it the largest celestial body in the asteroid belt.
