"Extraterrestrial" balloon PAMSS, created by request of NASA to search for traces of life on other planets, will be first launched in the Earth's atmosphere and tested on Sunday, March 8, if it does not interfere with the weather conditions, the press service of the University of Florida.
"The conditions in the Earth's upper atmosphere is very severe. We want to check whether our instruments survive at an altitude of 32 kilometers from the planet's surface. NASA support our project on the grounds that it will help the entire scientific community to be more prepared for the search for life beyond Earth and to the study of the cosmos as a whole ", - said one of the founders of the balloon, Robert Peel (Robert Peale) from the University of Central Florida in Orlando (USA).

Peel and his colleagues for nearly seven years working on the creation of a package of instruments which would allow relatively cheaply and reliably measure the levels of various gases in the atmosphere of Mars or other planets. According to him, today's tools, including gas analyzers rover Curiosity, do not have sufficient sensitivity to measure the levels of methane and other gases, indicating the presence of life on Mars or other celestial bodies.

His team developed the device PAMSS, weighing only 10 pounds, is able to "sniff out" even very small concentrations of nutrients and "non-living" gases not exceeding trillionth of a gram per gram of air. In addition to searching for the next life, NASA plans to use PAMSS for disclosure of how the atmosphere of Venus turned into a giant greenhouse, as well as to study the climate of Titan, the most Earth-"Moon" of the solar system.

If the weather is favorable on Sunday, the prototype will be sent PAMSS mediated by NASA in Earth's upper atmosphere, where it will hold about six hours. During this flight, scientists will test work tools, as well as examine the state of the ozone layer and other important components of the air envelope of the planet.
