10 minutes of chewing can remove 100 million bacteria - VIDEO PDF Print E-mail

Researchers from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands studied the efficacy of chewing gum. They found that after 10 minutes of chewing are removed from the mouth 100 million bacteria.

- But, the chewing gum of the same over a long time leads to the bacteria from penetrating into it again gum

- This may be just as effective as the use of dental floss, although they are intended for cleaning different areas of the oral cavity

- Researchers hope that further study can be used to create a chewing gum which is able to absorb specific bacteria associated with a particular disease.

Found that chewing gum can clean the mouth of bacteria, according to research.

The researchers found that even a conventional disc pad or gum capable of removing from the mouth 100 million. Bacteria, representing 10% of the microbial medium contained in saliva.

And they said chewing gum can be as effective as dental floss, despite the fact that they are aimed at the purification of different areas of the mouth.

The results appeared in the journal Plos One, conducted by researchers from the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.

They found that the most efficient gum during the first 30 seconds of chewing, and then the effect becomes less effective in "capturing bacteria" sliding scale measurements.

Also, they note that the only chewing gum, not containing sugar, bring similar benefits; if it contains sugar, is however, can "feed" bacteria in the mouth.

In one experiment, a certain number of participants were requested to lick the fingers, and then chew the chewing gum for 10 minutes.

The researchers found that about 100 million. Bacteria were recorded at each piece of gum, and their number increases with increasing time chewing.

"Caught bacteria were clearly visible in the used chewing gum under
electron microscope, "they -pishut in your newsletter.

They used two anonymous brand mint gum in their studies.

Chewing a gum removes up to 10% of the oral microbial environment, dwelling in the saliva.

But, nevertheless, they note that the chewy may produce the opposite effect, returning a number of captured bacteria in the oral cavity.

Researchers say chewing gum can be as effective as dental floss, despite the fact that are designed for different areas of the mouth. They hope that their research can be used to create in the future a special gum that can collect bacteria causing various diseases.

Prejudices associated with chewing gum.

Chewy gum alters the structure, reducing the stiffness of the gum due to the absorption of its components of saliva and release of water-soluble components "

"This is likely to affect the adhesion of bacteria to the gum, causing the release of the original captured more weakly adhering bacteria from chewing gum."

"Such a change in the composition of trapped bacteria supported by the observation that the diversity of species caught in chewing gum increases with the length of time chewing"

The researchers added that their observations can be used to develop gum capable of selectively removing certain bacteria from the mouth.
