Thursday, 29 January 2015 10:20

The European Space Agency (ESA) has submitted pictures of lightning, made from the International Space Station (ISS). Images were captured at night with a special device Nightpod, according to the website of the agency.

The astronauts spent the night photographing the storm from a height of 400 kilometers. As the ISS is moving at a speed of about thirty thoUSAnd kilometers per hour, all the images are blurred planet. To solve this problem, the ESA has developed an automated tripod Nightpod, mounted on the dome of the ISS. The device corrects for the velocity of the ISS, photographed holding an object in the center of the viewfinder.

The result is ultra-sharp images. Astronauts staying on the ISS can set the machine to automatically receive pictures: they enter the actual height, pitch and heading station. Typically used for photographing Nightpod cities of the Earth at night, but in 2012 the astronauts managed to shoot lightning flashes. In the final selection included 49 pictures. On what planet is the region been surveyed, in the press release are not reported.
